Chapter 4 - Tears Inside the Car|
The SUV doors slammed shut, locking the noise of the ballroom outside. Emily buried her face in my shoulder, sobbing like a child.
“Mom... why did you do that? Brandon is going to kill me. He’s going to be so furious,” Emily choked out, her voice filled with absolute terror.
My heart felt like it was being crushed. My daughter, once so confident and proud, was now cowering in fear of her own husband.
“Emily, listen to me,” I lifted her chin, looking straight into her swollen eyes. “Ever since you got married, I watched you slowly wither away. I hired a private investigator. I know what Brandon has been doing behind your back.”
Emily’s eyes widened, her breathing erratic.
“Mom... what do you know?”
“I know he forced you to quit your job. I know Patricia made you pay for all household expenses using your credit cards. And I also know Brandon has been secretly funneling money to another woman in the suburbs.”
Emily covered her mouth with her hands, hot tears streaming down her face in bitter realization.
“I found out about that last month,” she whispered in utter despair. “But I didn’t dare say anything. Patricia told me that if I ever divorced him, they would prove I was mentally unfit and take Lily away from me. I couldn't bear to lose my baby, Mom!”
I pulled her tightly into my arms, stroking her messy hair.

The car sped away into the night, carrying us away from that toxic family forever.
