Chapter 20 - Ready for War|

“Mom... who were those people? What black book?” Emily panicked, holding Lily, who was sobbing. “Let’s call the FBI, Mom!”
I stood pensively looking out the window where their black car had just disappeared. If we called the police now, given the power of the underground world, they could strike before the law could intervene. Richard had left me a mess, but he had also left me weapons to defend myself.
“Emily, listen to me,” I turned around, my eyes blazing with determination. “Pack your bags. Tonight, I’ll have someone fly you and Lily to a remote safehouse in the countryside via private helicopter. No one is to know that location.”
“What about you? Aren't you coming with me?”
“I have to stay here,” I took my daughter’s hands. “I’m not running away. If they want to play the devil's game, I’ll show them just how ruthless a mother can be to protect her family.”
I turned and walked down to the basement, heading straight for the safe. They wanted the list of powerful people in the underworld? I wasn't going to hand it to them. I was going to use that exact list to destroy every single one of them.
I picked up the phone, dialing an encrypted number Richard had told me to use only when staring death in the face.

“Hello,” a husky voice answered from the other end.
“Get ready,” I said, flashing a cold smile in the dark. “It’s time to go hunting.”
