Chapter 10 - The Sudden Pain|

I walked back inside, intending to tell Emily that the situation was safe. But as I reached the bedroom door, I heard a choked scream.
“Emily!” I rushed inside.
My daughter was curled up on the floor, her hands tightly clutching her swollen belly. Her water had broken, pooling across the rug. Her face was deathly pale, sweat drenched over her forehead.
“Mom... it hurts so much... Lily... the baby...” Emily groaned, her breathing interrupted.
The extreme stress from Patricia’s attacks and the shock of Brandon smashing the door had triggered premature labor. It was barely the end of her eighth month.
“Stay calm, sweetheart! Take a deep breath!” I immediately dialed emergency services, frantically patting her back.
Less than ten minutes later, the wail of an ambulance echoed outside. I held Emily’s hand tightly all the way to the hospital. She was in so much pain she almost passed out, but she kept muttering, “Don't let them... take Lily...”
“No one can do that. I swear on my life,” I gritted my teeth.
At the hospital, Emily was immediately rushed into the emergency room. Doctors rushed back and forth. I stood outside the glass door, heart pounding, praying for both of them.
Suddenly, the tapping of high heels echoed down the corridor.

Patricia Vale appeared. Her clothes were wrinkled, hair messy, lacking any elegance of the wealthy lady she used to be. But her eyes burned with madness and cruelty.
“Where is my daughter-in-law? Where is my Vale-named grandchild?” she shouted loudly at the nurse on duty.
