Chapter 19 - A New Game|

Silas let out a loud, dry laugh.

“Police, Ms. Vance? Do you think the police can protect you from the people who made the Vale company collapse in a single night?”

He casually sat down on the leather sofa, pulled a phone from his pocket, and tossed it onto the glass table. On the screen was video footage of Emily’s car parked outside her art gallery, with a red laser dot pointing straight at the window.

My face drained of color. They had been watching us for a long time.

“My boss doesn't like noise,” Silas said, his tone turning icy. “Richard stole an important ledger from us before he died. A black book. We know he hid it somewhere in this house, along with the trust fund.”

“I don't know what you're talking about,” I replied resolutely, though my mind was frantically thinking of the safe in the basement.

“You’re a smart woman, Margaret. You handled the Vale mother and son very cleanly. I admire that,” Silas stood up, smoothing his suit jacket. “I will give you forty-eight hours. Hand over the black book and the ten million dollars, and your family can live out the rest of your days in peace. Otherwise...”

He glanced at Lily, who had started crying loudly in Emily’s arms.

He turned and walked out the door, his two bodyguards following closely behind. The house fell back into a terrifying silence.
