Chapter 18 - Ghosts of the Past|

I slumped into a chair, cold sweat breaking out down my spine.
Them. The underground world. Richard’s enemies.
Right at that moment, the mansion doorbell rang. Startled, I hurriedly stuffed the letter and file back into the safe, locked it tightly, and ran upstairs.
Emily was carrying Lily to answer the door.
“Emily, don't open it!” I shouted.
But it was too late. The wooden front door swung wide open. Standing on the porch was not a delivery driver or a friend. It was a stranger in a tailored black suit, his eyes as cold as a snake’s. He wasn't alone; behind him stood two massive men.
“Good afternoon, ladies,” the man smiled politely yet menacingly, tipping his fedora. “I am Silas. An old friend of Mr. Richard Vance.”
Emily stepped back, holding Lily tightly to her chest. “Who are you? Why are you trespassing?”
“Ah, sorry for the abrupt visit,” Silas walked straight into the living room as if he owned the house, casting his eyes over the expensive paintings. “The Vale family turned out to be completely useless idiots. They messed up the simplest plan to recover the money Richard owed my boss.”

I regained my composure, stepping forward to shield Emily.
“My husband didn't owe your people a dime. Get out of my house before I call the police.”
