Chapter 12 - The First Cry|

After five hours of intense tension, the red light finally flickered off. The doctor stepped out, pulling down his face mask. Sweat beaded on his forehead, but his eyes lit up with joy.
“Congratulations. It’s a baby girl. A bit premature so she’s slightly underweight, but all vital signs are very strong. Mother and baby are doing well.”
I collapsed onto the waiting room bench, burying my face in my hands. The tears I had suppressed for months finally broke free.
I walked into the recovery room. Emily lay there, pale and exhausted, holding a tiny, sleeping baby wrapped in a pink blanket in her arms.
“Lily,” Emily whispered, looking up at me with tear-filled eyes. “Mom, isn't she beautiful?”
I touched my finger to my granddaughter’s soft cheek.
“She looks exactly like you when you were born,” I smiled. “She’s safe now. And so are you.”
“Did he... did they come here?” Emily asked anxiously.
“They will never be able to touch you two again,” I assured her.
The next day, the birth certificate paperwork arrived. When the nurse asked for the father’s name and the baby's last name, Emily didn't hesitate for a single second.
“Her name is Lily Vance. With my last name,” Emily stated firmly.
