Chapter 15 - The Price Paid|

Outside the courtroom, Patricia collapsed onto the hallway bench. Gone was her arrogance, gone were her diamond jewels—she had sold them all to pay legal fees.

Brandon stood frozen like a corpse. The underground loan sharks had started sending funeral wreaths to his doorstep since the previous night. They didn't care about a court verdict; they only cared about money.

As Emily and I walked past, Patricia looked up with desperate eyes.

“Margaret... please... for the sake of our former family ties... save us. They’re going to kill Brandon.” She dropped to her knees on the floor, clutching the hem of my skirt.

I stopped, looking down coldly at the woman who had once forced my daughter to scrub floors.

“Don't worry too much, Patricia,” I mocked her own words from the party. “Kneeling must be great exercise for you.”

I pulled my skirt away, linked arms with Emily, and walked away proudly without looking back.

Just three days later, the Vale real estate company officially filed for bankruptcy. Their luxury mansion was seized by the bank. Brandon was beaten and left with two broken legs in a dark alley by thugs, and Patricia had to move into a rundown slum on the city outskirts.

They lost everything due to their own bottomless greed.
