Chapter 9 - The Blue Plastic Bowl

I stood there in the kitchen, utterly confused, a massive lump forming in my throat.
"Valeria, but the boy was crying..." I weakly tried to interject.
"Doña Rosa, please do not interfere in my children's upbringing. You have already raised yours. Let me raise mine in peace," she snapped, turning her back on me and leaving me alone with my doubts.

I went to my room, fell to my knees, and started praying. But then, my attention was drawn to Capitán. His bowl is a massive, heavy blue plastic dish that sits perpetually in a corner of the kitchen, near the door leading to the laundry room.
Because Carlos loved the dog, he would buy large, expensive bags of kibble, the kind formulated for large adult dogs. The kibble was dark brown, hard, and had a very strong, pungent smell of dried meat and fat. I began to realize that Mateo and Leo would spend an inordinate amount of time just staring at the dog's bowl.
