Chapter 23 - Breaking the Locks

At seven in the morning, I heard the familiar, timid creak of the floorboards in the boys' bedroom.

Mateo and Leo were awake.

I walked down the hallway and gently pushed their door open. They were huddled together on the edge of Mateo’s bed, their eyes wide and perfectly still, waiting for the daily routine of fear to begin.

"Good morning, my beautiful boys,"

I smiled, keeping my voice as warm and light as possible.

"Where is she, Grandma?"

Leo whispered, his tiny hands gripping his brother's shirt.

"Is she going to be mad about the kitchen?"

Mateo asked, his voice shaking with absolute terror.

Before I could answer, Carlos walked into the room. He looked exhausted, but his face softened instantly into a look of profound, overwhelming love.

"She is gone, Mateo,"

Carlos said, kneeling on the floor so he was at eye level with his sons.

"She is gone, and she is never coming back. I promise you."

The boys looked at their father, completely stunned, unable to process the magnitude of the safety he was offering them.

"Are you hungry?"

Carlos asked gently, reaching out to stroke Leo’s messy hair.

"We aren't allowed to eat until ten,"

Mateo replied automatically, reciting the cruel rules Valeria had drilled into his mind.

Carlos closed his eyes for a second, fighting back a fresh wave of tears. He stood up, taking both of his sons by the hand.

"Come with me,"

Carlos instructed softly.

He led them downstairs to the kitchen. He walked directly over to the pantry door, where Valeria had installed a heavy metal padlock to keep the children out of the food.

Carlos grabbed a heavy steel hammer from the utility drawer.

With one violent, deafening swing, he smashed the hammer against the padlock. The metal shattered, and the lock clattered heavily onto the kitchen floor.

"There are no more locks in this house,"

Carlos announced, throwing the pantry doors wide open.
