Chapter 18 - The Dawn of Justice

I did not sleep for the rest of the night. I gathered my shattered grandchildren into my bed, wrapping them in blankets, stroking their hair until they cried themselves to exhaustion.

As dawn broke, my fear vanished entirely, replaced by an absolute, diamond-hard resolve for justice. I knew confronting Carlos without undeniable proof would be a fatal mistake; Valeria’s manipulative poison would paint me as a senile, meddling old woman.

I quietly slipped out the front door to the house of my neighbor, Doña Meche, and her tech-savvy nephew, Toño. When I tearfully explained the horrific reality of the dog bowl, Toño was appalled.

"I can hide a camera in the kitchen," Toño promised, his eyes burning with righteous anger. "It will record directly to my phone. When she does it again, we will have her."

While Valeria slept late, lazy and oblivious, Toño snuck into our kitchen and expertly concealed the tiny black lens behind a wicker basket atop the cabinets, pointing directly at the blue plastic bowl. The trap was set.
