Chapter 8 - The Monster's Glare

Those three words felt like a physical blow to my chest. I immediately took his fragile, cold hand and led him toward the kitchen.
"I'll make you a nice, warm egg right now, my boy," I said, forcing a reassuring smile onto my wrinkled face.
But exactly at that moment, Valeria walked into the room. Her eyes immediately darted from me to the boy. She possessed a very heavy, frightening look—a gaze so cold and devoid of maternal warmth it made my blood run icy.
"What exactly are you doing, Mother-in-law?" she asked in a sharp, glacial tone.
"I'm going to make the boy something to eat; he says he's hungry," I replied, standing my ground.
Valeria let out a dry, mocking laugh, as if I had just uttered the most absurd joke.

"Don't believe a word he says. He just ate a little while ago. He's just being manipulative and picky. He wants to eat all the time so he doesn't have to sit down and do his homework. Go to your room immediately, Leo," she ordered the boy with terrifying sternness.
Leo didn't argue. He immediately dropped his head, let go of my hand, and walked slowly toward the stairs, completely defeated.
