Chapter 24 - The Real Broth

The kitchen felt entirely different that morning. The dark, oppressive shadow had been lifted.

I stood by the stove, chopping fresh vegetables, garlic, and pulling a large, beautiful chicken from the refrigerator.

"What are you making, Grandma?"

Leo asked, standing a safe distance away, his eyes tracking my every movement.

"I am making chicken broth, my love,"

I replied, smiling down at him.

Mateo instantly tensed, stepping protectively in front of his little brother.

"We don't like the broth, Grandma. It tastes like dirty water,"

Mateo whispered fearfully, remembering the disgusting, salty punishment meals Valeria had forced them to eat.

"This is not her broth, Mateo,"

Carlos intervened, kneeling beside the boys and placing a hand on their shoulders.

"This is Grandma's recipe. It is filled with actual meat, fresh carrots, and love. You don't have to eat it if you don't want to. But I promise you, it is safe."

When the rich, incredible aroma of roasting garlic and chicken filled the house, I saw the boys' tiny noses twitch. Their stomachs growled loudly, betraying their fear.

I served them two large, steaming bowls at the kitchen table. I set a plate of warm, freshly baked bread right in the center.

"Eat as much as you want,"

I told them gently.

Mateo picked up his spoon with a trembling hand. He took a tiny, hesitant sip.

His eyes widened in absolute shock. The rich, savory flavor was a complete revelation. He looked at Leo and nodded frantically.

Within minutes, the boys were devouring the soup, dipping the warm bread into the broth, eating with a desperate, starving joy that brought tears to my eyes.
