Chapter 27 - The State's Inspection

Three days after the arrest, a sleek gray car pulled into our driveway.
A woman holding a thick clipboard and wearing a severe gray suit knocked firmly on our front door. It was the investigator from Child Protective Services.
"Mr. Carlos? I am Agent Ramirez. I am here to conduct a mandatory welfare check following the criminal indictment of your wife,"
The woman stated professionally as Carlos let her inside.
My heart hammered in my chest. The fear of losing my grandsons to the state foster system was a terrifying, suffocating nightmare.
"Please, come in,"
Carlos said respectfully, gesturing toward the living room.
The agent spent two hours inspecting every corner of the house. She checked the refrigerator, which Carlos had completely stocked with fresh fruits, meats, and milk. She inspected the boys' bedrooms, checking for clean clothes and proper bedding.
Finally, she sat down in the living room to interview Mateo and Leo privately.
I paced the kitchen, praying silently to the Virgin Mary.
When Agent Ramirez finally emerged, her severe expression had softened significantly.
"Your sons are traumatized, Mr. Carlos,"
Agent Ramirez noted, looking at her clipboard.
"But they are entirely clear about who hurt them. They spoke very highly of you, and of their grandmother. They said the locks are gone."
"They will never be locked away again,"
Carlos promised, his voice thick with emotion.
"I am recommending full, expedited sole custody to you, with mandatory trauma counseling for the children,"
May you like
Agent Ramirez smiled warmly.
"You have a good home here. Keep them safe."
