Chapter 6 - The Noodle Soup Illusion

I could no longer stay entirely silent. I had to say something, anything, without sounding accusatory.
"Valeria, don't you think the children are eating very little lately? Yesterday I saw that they barely even touched the noodle soup I prepared," I remarked to her one afternoon, carefully trying to keep my tone light and kind.
She didn't even bother to look up from her phone. She was lounging on the living room couch, her thumbs flying across the screen.

"Oh, Doña Rosa, you know exactly how picky they are at this age. They don't like anything I make. If it's not greasy chips or sugary sweets, they absolutely refuse to eat. I'm certainly not going to get on my knees and beg them," she replied, her voice dripping with annoyance.
I believed her. Or rather, I violently forced myself to believe her. It is true that children that age can sometimes be notoriously difficult eaters. I wanted to believe it was a phase.
