Chapter 14 - The Flickering Light of Truth

I grabbed my heavy wooden cane, slipped my aching feet into my slippers, and crept out of my room, praying the wooden floorboards wouldn't betray me.

My legs were shaking violently as I approached the kitchen archway. The rasping sound was coming directly from the dark corner, exactly where the dog's bowl sat.

I thought about screaming for help. I thought about retreating and calling the police. But before panic could completely overtake me, I reached out my trembling hand and flipped the kitchen light switch.

The old fluorescent bulb flickered aggressively for a painful second, buzzing loudly, before finally bathing the room in harsh, white light. What my aged eyes saw in that horrific moment... I truly wish the Lord had struck me blind before forcing me to witness that scene.
