Chapter 22 - The Purge of the Shadows

The sun was just beginning to bleed through the curtains when Carlos stood up from the sofa.
His sorrow had crystallized into a cold, fierce determination. Without saying another word, he marched up the wooden stairs, his heavy footsteps echoing with a renewed, protective purpose.
I followed him slowly, leaning heavily on my cane.
When I reached the threshold of the master bedroom, Carlos was already tearing through the large walk-in closet. He held a massive black garbage bag in one hand, violently shoving Valeria’s expensive dresses, silk robes, and designer shoes into the plastic.
"What are you doing, Carlos?"
I asked quietly, watching the frantic, focused energy in his movements.
"I am erasing her,"
Carlos replied, his jaw clenched so tightly the muscle ticked visibly.
"I don't want a single trace of her perfume left in this house. I don't want the boys to wake up and see anything that reminds them of the woman who forced them to their knees."
He swept his arm across the vanity, knocking her expensive makeup, acrylic nail kits, and lotions directly into the trash bag.
It was a physical, desperately needed exorcism of the space. For months, Valeria’s vanity had been her altar, the place where she spent hours obsessing over her own reflection while my grandsons starved downstairs.
"She is never stepping foot in this house again,"
Carlos vowed, tying the heavy black bag shut with a brutal, definitive knot.
"The police said she will be held without bail due to the video evidence,"
I reminded him gently.
"Good,"
May you like
Carlos stated flatly, grabbing two more empty trash bags.
"Because if she ever comes near my boys again, the police will be the least of her worries."
