Chapter 21 - The First Sunrise

The flashing red and blue lights of the police cruisers finally faded into the distance, leaving our modest street in absolute silence.
I stood in the doorway of the living room, my hands still trembling slightly, gripping the wooden handle of my cane. The storm that had raged inside our home for months had been violently ripped away, but the wreckage it left behind was profound.
Carlos was sitting on the edge of the sofa, his head buried deep in his calloused hands.
He had not moved an inch since the officers dragged his screaming, cursing wife out the front door. The horrific video Toño had played on his phone seemed to echo endlessly in the quiet room.
"Carlos,"
I whispered softly, taking a slow, painful step toward my son.
He didn't look up. A heavy, agonizing sob tore through his broad shoulders, a sound of such absolute devastation that it broke my heart into a thousand pieces.
"I left them with a monster, Mama,"
Carlos choked out, his voice muffled by his hands.
"I drove that damn taxi for fourteen hours a day, thinking I was giving them a good life. I was paying for the very food she denied them."
"You did not know, my son,"
I replied, sitting down gently beside him and placing my wrinkled hand on his shaking back.
"She was a master of deception. She blinded you, just as she tried to silence me."
"But I am their father!"
Carlos suddenly yelled, dropping his hands and looking at me with eyes completely bloodshot and filled with self-hatred.
"I should have seen it! I should have noticed they were getting thinner. I should have asked why they always looked so terrified when she walked into the room!"
"Guilt will not feed your children tomorrow morning, Carlos,"
I told him firmly, looking directly into his tear-filled eyes.

"They do not need a broken man right now. They need the father who loves them. They need you to show them that the nightmare is permanently over."
Carlos stared at me for a long time, the heavy truth of my words slowly piercing through his panic. He took a deep, shuddering breath, wiping the tears from his exhausted face.
