Chapter 10 - A Strange and Dangerous Game

Sometimes, when the boys thought no one was watching them, they would sit cross-legged on the cold kitchen floor right next to Capitán. I could see them clearly from my vantage point in the living room.

I initially thought they were just playing with the dog. Capitán is incredibly gentle and patiently let the children approach him, even while he was eating. But one afternoon, I saw something that deeply puzzled and disturbed me.

Mateo was petting the dog's thick neck with one hand, and with his other hand, he was getting dangerously close to the blue kibble bowl. I couldn't see perfectly, but it looked incredibly as though the boy quickly grabbed something from the plate and shoved it into his pocket.

When I made a loud noise with my cane as I stood up, Mateo jumped as if he had been electrocuted, hid his hands behind his back, and sprinted out into the yard. I mentioned it to Valeria that night.

"They're just kids, Doña Rosa. They invent strange games," she replied dismissively, rolling her eyes.

Once again, I decided not to push the issue.
