Chapter 12 - The Punishment of Starvation

When Valeria finally returned, the sun had already set, and the house was cloaked in shadows. She walked into the kitchen, saw the three half-finished bowls of cold broth sitting on the table, and flew into a spectacular rage.
"Oh! So you don’t like my food? You ungrateful little brats! Well, you are not having dinner tonight! Let’s see if you’re not so fussy tomorrow when you're starving," she shouted, her voice echoing off the brick walls.
She violently grabbed the plates and dumped the food into the trash can. I wanted to intervene. I pushed myself up from my chair, resting my trembling weight on both hands atop my cane.
"Valeria, for God’s sake, it’s just broth, maybe it didn’t agree with their little stomachs. Give them at least a small glass of warm milk with a piece of bread before bed," I pleaded, my voice shaking.
She glared at me with pure venom.

"I said absolutely no dinner, and that is final! Go to bed now!" she roared at the children.
Mateo took little Leo by the hand, and they quietly marched upstairs, their eyes brimming with tears.
