Chapter 9 - The Guest of Honor

|

When dinner was served, Barbara made her way toward the center of the ballroom, expecting to sit at Table One—the table traditionally reserved for major Reynolds Foundation donations.

However, when she reached Table One, the usher politely checked her place card.

“I’m sorry, Mrs. Reynolds,” the young man said deferentially. “Table One is reserved exclusively for the Chief of Surgery, the Hospital Board, and their immediate guests.”

Barbara bristled. “I am Richard Reynolds’ wife! We donated fifty thousand dollars to this foundation!”

“I understand, ma'am,” the usher replied calmly. “Your table is Table Fourteen.”

Barbara followed his pointing finger toward the back of the room—right next to the catering entrance and the AV equipment.

The exact same location where she had seated me at her family brunch three weeks ago.

Daniel walked past her, taking my hand as he led me directly to the elevated Head Table at the front of the stage.

“Enjoy your dinner, Mom,” Daniel whispered as he passed her.

Barbara stood rooted to the spot, surrounded by whispers, forced to make the long walk to the back of the room while every eye watched her retreat.

An hour later, Chairman Arthur Vance took the stage and tapped his microphone.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” Arthur’s voice resonated through the speakers. “Tonight, we honor a woman whose brilliance in the operating theater is matched only by her humility and grace. Please join me in welcoming our Keynote Speaker and Chief Surgeon, Dr. Emily Carter!”

The room erupted into a thunderous standing ovation.

I stood up, adjusting my velvet gown, and walked up the steps to the podium, looking out over the sea of cheering faces—and landing my gaze directly on Barbara, sitting alone near the back doors.
