Chapter 20 - The Uninvited Shadow

|

The wedding reception in the glass conservatory was a triumph.

Music filled the air, champagne flowed, and for the first time in months, the Reynolds family was truly united in joy and mutual respect.

At ten o'clock, as the party was winding down, I stepped out onto the breezy stone terrace to catch a moment of quiet air.

Daniel joined me, wrapping his arms around my waist from behind and resting his chin on my shoulder.

“Happy, Mrs. Reynolds?” Daniel murmured softly.

“Extremely,” I smiled, leaning back against his chest.

Suddenly, a young hospital courier hurried across the terrace garden, looking flushed and out of breath. He held an official black leather portfolio marked with an urgent red seal.

“Dr. Carter! I’m so sorry to interrupt your wedding,” the courier panted, handing me the portfolio. “This was just delivered to the hospital by a federal courier. It’s marked urgent and confidential.”

I frowned, taking the portfolio and breaking the red wax seal.

Inside was a single official document from the International Medical Registry, accompanied by a letter stamped with the crest of the European Surgical Board.

I opened the letter and scanned the first few lines:

“Dear Dr. Carter,

We regret to inform you that an official inquiry has been opened regarding your late father’s medical research legacy and the original patent ownership of the cardiothoracic surgical procedure you pioneered at St. Victoria.

A claimant representing the Vance International Trust has filed a petition asserting that your medical license was obtained under false pretenses... and demanding the immediate suspension of your surgical credentials worldwide.”

My breath hitched in my throat.

Daniel noticed my sudden pale expression. “Emily? What is it? What does it say?”

I looked up from the paper into the dark, shadowed gardens surrounding the conservatory, feeling a cold chill sweep across my skin.

The battle with Barbara was over.

But a far darker, deeper shadow from my past had just stepped into the light.
