Chapter 18 - The Master at Work

|

For fourteen straight hours, I lived inside Operating Room One.

Amputations, internal hemorrhages, crushed chest cavities—one critical patient after another was wheeled through my doors, and one by one, my surgical team brought them back from the brink of death.

By five o'clock the following morning, the final trauma patient was stabilized in the ICU.

I sat in the doctor’s lounge, exhausted, sipping hot tea while staring out at the rising sun illuminating the Chicago skyline.

The door opened, and Richard Reynolds walked in, carrying a fresh garment bag.

“I brought your wedding dress, Dr. Carter,” Richard said with a soft smile, laying the bag gently on the sofa. “Daniel sent me. He said if you were going to work all night saving lives before your own wedding, the least we could do was bring the dress to you.”

I laughed, wiping a smudge of surgical prep from my cheek. “Thank you, Richard.”

Richard looked at me with deep affection.

“You know, Emily,” Richard said thoughtfully. “When Daniel first brought you home, I wondered why a Chief Surgeon would pretend to be a floor nurse.”

“And now?” I asked.

“Now I realize you weren't pretending,” Richard replied warmly. “You just knew that true strength doesn't need to shout. It shows up when the world is falling apart and fixes what’s broken.”
