Chapter 13 - The Trap Sprung

On Thursday morning, I arrived at my office to find a formal summons from the Hospital Ethics Committee taped to my door.
I was ordered to appear in the main boardroom at two o'clock to address a severe administrative complaint filed against me.
When I walked into the boardroom, the air was tense.
Chairman Arthur Vance sat at the head of the table, looking deeply uncomfortable. Beside him sat Julian Vance, holding a thick legal folder, and sitting near the back of the room was Barbara Reynolds, wearing a sharp dark suit and an expression of smug victory.
“Dr. Carter,” Arthur began gravely. “A formal complaint has been lodged by Mrs. Barbara Reynolds, alleging that you performed emergency surgery on her husband, Richard Reynolds, without proper ethical clearance or proxy consent, violating Section 4 of the Hospital Bylaws.”
Julian stepped forward, opening his folder.
“Furthermore,” Julian announced smoothly to the board, “Dr. Carter failed to declare her personal relationship with the Reynolds family prior to taking the case, creating a blatant conflict of interest. I move for her immediate suspension pending a full medical board investigation.”
I stood near the podium, keeping my posture straight and my face expressionless.
“Are you finished, Dr. Vance?” I asked softly.
Julian smirked. “The facts speak for themselves, Emily. You broke protocol to play the hero.”
Before Arthur could speak, the doors at the back of the boardroom swung open sharply.

Daniel walked in, holding a tablet, accompanied by St. Victoria’s Chief Legal Counsel, Sarah Jenkins.
“Not so fast,” Daniel announced, his voice echoing across the room.
