Chapter 16 - Terms of Engagement

With Julian ousted and Barbara completely discredited, peace returned to St. Victoria Medical Center.

A month later, wedding preparations resumed.

Daniel and I sat in the living room of our Chicago condo, reviewing wedding invitations and seating charts for our upcoming ceremony in the countryside.

There was a soft knock on our door.

Daniel opened it to find Richard standing outside, leaning on a polished cane, with Barbara standing two paces behind him. She was wearing a simple cotton dress, her hair pulled back into a modest bun, looking utterly humbled.

“Son. Emily,” Richard said warmly, stepping inside. “May we speak with you?”

“Come in, Dad,” Daniel said, though his eyes remained wary as he glanced at his mother.

Barbara stepped into the foyer, keeping her hands folded in front of her. She looked at me, her eyes filled with genuine tears.

“Emily,” Barbara’s voice was barely a whisper. “I came here today... not to ask for forgiveness, because I know I don't deserve it. I came to tell you the truth.”

I stood near the kitchen island, listening quietly.

“I was jealous of you,” Barbara confessed, her voice cracking. “I spent my entire life defining my value by my husband's money and my social standing. When I met you—a woman who built real power, real respect, and saved lives through her own brilliant mind—it made me feel utterly insignificant.”

She took a deep breath, bowing her head deeply before me.

“I am deeply, truly sorry for how I treated you.”
