Chapter 6 - The Backhanded Apology

Three days later, Richard was transferred out of the ICU and into a private recovery suite on the VIP floor.
I was sitting in my glass-walled office finishing my surgical logs when my door clicked open.
Barbara walked in, carrying a large bouquet of rare white orchids. She set them on the edge of my mahogany desk and stood there awkwardly, smoothing her silk blouse.
“I brought these for your office,” Barbara said, her voice strained. “The florist said they represent distinction.”
I didn't look up from my laptop keyboard. “Thank you, Barbara. My administrative assistant will find a place for them.”
Barbara cleared her throat, shifting her weight from foot to foot. “I came to... express my appreciation for what you did for Richard.”
“I do it for all my patients,” I said calmly, finally closing the laptop and looking at her.
“Yes, well...” Barbara tried to force a practiced, country-club smile. “You really should have corrected me, Emily. If I had known you were a physician of such high standing, I obviously would have treated you differently. It was a bit unfair of you to keep it a secret, don't you think?”
I let out a soft, amused laugh.
“So the level of respect you give a human being depends entirely on their job title?” I asked, leaning back in my chair.
Barbara blinked, caught off guard. “Well, no, but—”
“If I had been an entry-level floor nurse, Barbara, your behavior over the past six weeks would still have been unforgivable,” I said, my voice dropping into a razor-sharp tone. “Nurses work twelve-hour shifts, save lives daily, and hold this entire hospital together. The fact that you thought abusing them was acceptable tells me everything I ever needed to know about your character.”

Barbara swallowed hard, her face turning crimson.
“Now, if you’ll excuse me,” I said, picking up a folder. “I have surgeries to perform.”
