Chapter 17 - The Trial of Forgiveness

|

The room was quiet for a long moment.

I looked at Barbara. The arrogant, snobbish woman who had mocked me at the country club was gone. In her place stood someone stripped of all pretenses, forced to face her own emptiness.

“I appreciate your honesty, Barbara,” I said steadily. “And I forgive you. Not for your sake, but because I refuse to carry your toxicity into my marriage with Daniel.”

Barbara looked up, fresh tears running down her cheeks. “Thank you... Emily.”

“However,” I added firmly, “forgiveness does not mean immediate trust. You are welcome to attend our wedding as a guest. But you will not have a role in planning it, and you will not make speeches.”

Barbara nodded hastily. “I understand. I completely accept your conditions.”

Richard smiled warmly, placing a hand on his wife's shoulder. “Thank you, Emily. You have shown more grace to this family than we ever showed you.”

Two weeks later, the day before the wedding, an unexpected emergency siren sounded across the city.

A massive crane had collapsed at a construction site downtown, leaving dozens of workers critically injured.

My phone rang. It was the hospital emergency dispatcher.

“Dr. Carter, we have a Mass Casualty Event. Trauma units are overwhelmed. We need you.”

I looked at Daniel, who was already holding out my coat and surgical bag.

“Go save them, Chief,” Daniel said with a proud smile. “I’ll be waiting at the altar tomorrow.”
