Chapter 14 - The Counter-Attack

Julian frowned as Daniel and Attorney Jenkins walked down the center aisle.
“This is a closed board hearing!” Julian snapped. “Non-board members are not permitted!”
“Mr. Reynolds is here as his father’s legal power of attorney,” Attorney Jenkins interjected authoritatively. “And as the person who holds Richard Reynolds’ medical proxy.”
Jenkins placed a signed, notarized document on the table in front of Chairman Arthur Vance.
“This is Richard Reynolds’ official Healthcare Directive, executed three years ago,” Jenkins explained. “It clearly states that in the event of medical incapacitation, his son, Daniel Reynolds—not his wife—holds sole decision-making authority.”
Barbara’s face turned pale. “What? That’s... that’s impossible!”
“Dad signed it after your third attempt to alter his estate trust, Mom,” Daniel said coldly, looking directly at Barbara. “And I personally signed the emergency surgical consent form for Dr. Carter five minutes before she took Dad into OR Three.”
Julian’s jaw tightened. “Even so! The conflict of interest remains! She didn't declare her engagement!”
“Actually, she did,” I interjected, pulling a document from my own folder. “When I was promoted to Chief of Surgery six months ago, I submitted a full personal disclosure form to HR, listing my relationship with Daniel Reynolds.”
I slid the stamped document across the table.
Julian stared at the paper, his face draining of color.
“And there’s one more thing,” Daniel added, activating his tablet and pressing play on an audio recording.
The speaker filled the boardroom with clear, unmistakable voices:

“I can write that letter tomorrow... Once the Board suspends her, I will step in as Acting Chief of Surgery.”
Barbara’s and Julian’s recorded voices echoed off the paneled walls, exposing their entire plot to every board member present.
