Chapter 15 - The Fallen Board

|

The boardroom fell into a suffocating, deadly silence.

Chairman Arthur Vance looked at his nephew Julian with pure, boiling fury, then turned his gaze to Barbara, who was cowering in her chair.

“Julian,” Arthur’s voice trembled with rage. “You attempted to conspire with a patient's family member to fabricate charges against our Chief of Surgery?”

“Uncle Arthur, wait! I can explain—” Julian stammered, backing away from the table.

“You are stripped of your board seat effective immediately,” Arthur barked, slamming his fist onto the table. “And I will personally ensure the State Medical Board opens a formal investigation into your professional ethics!”

Two security guards stepped into the room and escorted a sweating, panicked Julian out the door.

Arthur then turned to Barbara.

“Mrs. Reynolds,” Arthur said coldly. “Your actions are a disgrace to this foundation. Effective immediately, your guest privileges at St. Victoria Medical Center are permanently revoked.”

Barbara buried her face in her hands, letting out a muffled sob of absolute defeat.

I walked up to the head of the table, collected my documents, and looked down at Barbara one last time.

“You tried to ruin my career to save your ego, Barbara,” I said quietly. “Now you have neither.”

Without waiting for a response, I took Daniel’s hand and walked out of the boardroom into the sunlit corridor outside.
