Chapter 5 - The Awakening

|

By noon the following day, Richard Reynolds opened his eyes in the Intensive Care Unit.

The breathing tube had been removed, and his color had returned to a healthy pink. Daniel and Barbara were sitting beside his bed when I walked in for afternoon rounds, accompanied by two surgical residents.

“Dr. Carter,” the lead resident handed me the chart. “Patient’s arterial pressure is optimal, and urine output is steady.”

Richard turned his head weakly, his eyes clearing as he looked at me.

“Emily...” he croaked out, his voice raspy from the breathing tube.

I stepped to his bedside and gently checked his pulse. “Save your energy, Richard. You’ve been through a massive procedure.”

“They... they told me,” Richard whispered, reaching out to lightly pat my hand. “They told me you opened my chest... and fixed my heart yourself.”

“It’s my job,” I said softly.

Richard looked over at his wife, who was sitting rigid in her chair, staring at her hands.

“Barbara,” Richard said, his tone surprisingly sharp despite his physical weakness. “Did you know about this?”

Barbara flinched. “Richard, please, you need to rest—”

“Did you know Emily was the Chief Surgeon here?” Richard demanded, his eyes narrowing.

“No, Dad, she didn't,” Daniel interjected coldly from the corner of the room. “Because Mom never bothered to ask Emily a single real question about her career. She just assumed Emily was low-class because she worked with her hands.”

Richard looked at his wife with profound disappointment.

“You always were a fool for labels, Barbara,” Richard said quietly. “Emily saved my life while you were busy looking down your nose at her.”

Barbara looked as though she had been slapped across the face.
