Chapter 11 - The Arrival of Dr. Vance

|

Two weeks later, the hospital atmosphere shifted.

A new face arrived at St. Victoria: Dr. Julian Vance, a brilliant but notoriously arrogant cardiothoracic surgeon who had recently been appointed to the Hospital Board through his wealthy family ties.

Julian was Chairman Arthur Vance’s nephew, and he had made no secret of his belief that he, not a thirty-two-year-old woman, should be Chief of Surgery.

I was finishing rounds in the ICU when Julian strode up to the nurse’s station, flanked by two junior administrators.

“Dr. Carter,” Julian said, his tone dripping with condescension as he adjusted his designer necktie. “I’ve been reviewing your recent operating schedule. You’ve taken on three high-risk aortic cases this week alone.”

“I take the cases that require my expertise, Dr. Vance,” I replied without looking up from my chart.

Julian leaned against the counter, smirking. “Or perhaps you’re overextending yourself to maintain your golden reputation. Taking on Richard Reynolds was a high-stakes gamble. If he had died on your table, your career would have been over.”

“I don't gamble with human lives, Julian,” I said, closing the chart with a sharp snap. “I perform surgery. Is there an actual medical issue you wish to discuss, or are you just mark-checking?”

Julian’s smile faded, replaced by a cold, calculating glare.

“The Board is holding a quarterly performance audit next Friday, Emily,” Julian whispered, leaning closer. “I’ll be reviewing every single one of your surgical mortality rates personally.”

“Feel free,” I replied smoothly. “My record speaks for itself.”

What I didn't know was that Julian had already found an unexpected ally outside the hospital walls.

That evening, Julian was spotted having dinner at the Reynolds Country Club—sitting at a private table with Barbara Reynolds.
