Chapter 8 - DANIEL’S FATHER STOLE THE WILL

Daniel read his father’s signature twice.
Then a third time.
No mistake.
Richard Hale had removed Eleanor’s amended will.
Three days before she died.
Emily looked at him.
Daniel did not defend Richard.
Good.
He simply said,
“My father helped her.”
Evelyn nodded.
“Yes.”
The truth did not need decoration.
Arthur obtained the bank access archive.
Richard entered at 10:14 a.m.
Left at 10:37.
He removed one document envelope.
Margaret entered the bank two hours later.
That was the first crack.
Daniel looked at his mother’s access record.
“She lied about never knowing the amended will existed.”
Arthur nodded.
Vanessa whispered,
“So the entire inheritance structure was built on a missing document.”
Not inheritance.
Control.
Arthur corrected her.
“The foundation held over eighty million dollars in charitable assets.”
The room froze.
Margaret had spent eighteen years controlling money she had been removed from.
Emily stared at the number.
Her mother had been hidden.
Eleanor’s will had been stolen.
And the same woman had arranged for a diamond necklace to appear in Emily’s handbag so she would look like a thief.
Daniel looked at Emily.
“She needed you discredited before the archive opened.”
Emily nodded.
That was the second crack.
But one question remained.
Who gave Vanessa the necklace?
Margaret denied it.
Vanessa insisted it appeared in her room.
The CCTV showed Vanessa planting it.
But not who handed it to her.
Arthur checked the mansion cameras again.
Service corridor.
Vanessa’s bedroom hallway.
Kitchen passage.
One camera had a blind spot.
Exactly fourteen seconds.
At 7:42 a.m.
Someone entered Vanessa’s room.
No face visible.
Only one hand.
Caramel-brown sleeve.
Large silver ring.
Everyone looked at Margaret.
She wore the same ring.
But Emily noticed something.
“The brooch.”
Margaret frowned.
Emily looked at the frame.
The person entering Vanessa’s room wore no silver brooch.
Margaret had worn hers all morning.
Daniel asked,
“Could she have removed it?”
Emily looked closer.
Then shook her head.
“The ring is on the wrong hand.”
The room changed.
Margaret wore her large silver ring on the right.
The person in the footage wore it on the left.
Vanessa went pale.
Daniel looked at her.
“You know who it was.”
She said nothing.
Wrong move.
That was the third crack.
Emily stepped closer.
“You recognized the hand.”
Vanessa began crying.
Margaret looked at her.
“Don’t.”
Too late.
Vanessa whispered,
“It was Diane.”
Daniel froze.
“Diane?”
His aunt.
Margaret’s younger sister.
A woman who had not been seen at the mansion in twelve years.
Evelyn closed her eyes.
“You never knew.”
Daniel stared at her.
“Knew what?”
Evelyn answered.
“Diane was Eleanor’s other witness.”
The room froze.
Margaret stopped breathing.
Diane knew about the stolen foundation money.
She knew about Evelyn’s forced admission.
She knew the amended will existed.
And she had apparently returned to the mansion that morning.
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
“Why did Diane give you the necklace?”
Vanessa shook her head.
“She didn’t.”
Silence.
“She gave me the black velvet box.”
“What did she say?”
Vanessa’s face collapsed.
“She said, ‘Do exactly what Margaret told you. Then watch the camera.’”
Emily froze.
Daniel understood first.
Diane had not started the frame-up.
She had allowed Vanessa to think she was following Margaret’s instructions.
Why?
To force the CCTV reveal.
To expose Vanessa.
To expose the necklace.
To open Eleanor’s archive.
No shouting.
No chaos.
Worse.
A trap inside a trap.
Then Arthur’s phone rang.
Mansion security.
A woman had just entered through the east gate.
Silver hair.
Black coat.
Carrying a red leather ledger.
Daniel looked at Margaret.
Margaret went white.
May you like
Diane was back.
And she had brought the one record Eleanor never trusted anyone else to keep.
