Chapter 22

The fallout over the next forty-eight hours was absolute and catastrophic for Margaret’s inner circle.

Acting on the evidence in the Brightwood file, state police raided the psychiatric facility at dawn. Dr. Aris Thorne was arrested in his office, completely humiliated as he was led out in handcuffs past the very patients he had abused.

Simultaneously, Interpol agents in Geneva walked into a highly exclusive, private medical clinic nestled in the Swiss Alps. They found Richard exactly where the forensic ledger said he would be. He was bedridden, suffering from profound aphasia due to his stroke, unable to speak or move his right side. He could not defend himself as the federal agents formally arrested him for conspiracy to commit murder, reading him his rights in a sterile, white room.

The news broke globally by Tuesday afternoon.

Billionaire Philanthropist Arrested in Historic Fraud and Murder Conspiracy.

The headlines dominated every network. The once-untouchable legacy of Margaret’s empire was dragged through the mud, exposed as a syndicate of theft, gaslighting, and murder.

Emily and Evelyn watched the news coverage from the sprawling living room of the mansion.

“It feels surreal,” Evelyn murmured, sipping a cup of hot tea. “For twenty years, she was a god. Now, she’s just a criminal in an orange jumpsuit.”

“Gods bleed when you hit them with the truth,” Emily replied smoothly, turning off the television.

Arthur hurried into the living room, his phone glued to his ear. He looked exhausted but entirely triumphant.

“The board of directors is panicking,” Arthur announced, hanging up the phone. “The five remaining loyalists Margaret installed to rubber-stamp her theft are demanding an emergency meeting. They want to vote you out, Emily, claiming the scandal is hurting the foundation’s public image.”

Emily laughed. It was a cold, sharp sound.

“They want to vote me out? I’m the legally appointed independent protector. I have unilateral authority.”

“They are hoping you’ll buckle under the pressure and resign for a massive buyout,” Arthur explained. “They are old money. They assume everyone has a price.”

Emily stood up, smoothing the front of her simple, elegant black dress. She wasn't wearing a maid’s uniform anymore.

“Let’s go meet the board, Arthur. It’s time I introduce myself properly.”

Daniel, who had been sitting quietly in the corner reading a book, stood up.

“Can I come?” he asked. “I want to see their faces when you fire them.”

Emily looked at him, a genuine, small smile touching her lips.

“Yes, Daniel. You can carry my briefcase.”
