Chapter 21

Emily opened the Brightwood file, spreading the documents across Margaret’s massive oak bed.
The paperwork was a horrifying testament to systemic corruption. It detailed exactly how much money Margaret had paid the hospital administrators to keep Evelyn heavily sedated and hidden under a false name.
“Look at these signatures,” Emily said, her finger tracing a line of ink at the bottom of a transfer authorization. “Dr. Aris Thorne. He was the chief of psychiatry at Brightwood. He signed off on every single medication increase, every solitary confinement order.”
Evelyn looked at the name, her body trembling slightly.
“Thorne,” Evelyn whispered, the sound of the name triggering a wave of dark memories. “He was the one who told me I was sick. He told me you had abandoned me, Emily. He said the only way I would ever get better was to forget the past.”
Emily’s eyes blazed with a cold, terrifying fury. Margaret was in jail, but the mercenaries who had executed her orders were still walking free, wearing white coats and holding medical licenses.
“Arthur!” Emily shouted, not caring who heard her in the mansion.
The lawyer came jogging up the grand staircase, slightly out of breath, clutching his ever-present briefcase.
“Yes, Emily?”
“Call the District Attorney immediately,” Emily ordered, shoving the Brightwood file into Arthur’s chest. “I want arrest warrants issued for Dr. Aris Thorne and the entire senior administration of the Brightwood psychiatric facility. They accepted foundation funds as bribes to falsely imprison a perfectly healthy woman.”
Arthur looked at the file, his eyes widening as he read the horrific details.
“This is medical malpractice on an unprecedented scale,” Arthur breathed. “If we expose this, Brightwood will be completely shut down by the state medical board within the week.”
“I don't just want them shut down,” Emily stated, her voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. “I want them prosecuted. I want every single doctor who looked the other way sitting in a cell next to Margaret.”
Daniel watched Emily, entirely awestruck by her fierce, unyielding pursuit of justice. She wasn't just tearing down his mother’s empire; she was actively destroying the corrupt systems that had allowed the empire to exist.
“I can testify,” Daniel offered, stepping forward. “I remember Margaret meeting with Dr. Thorne at the house multiple times over the years. I can place him here, accepting the checks.”
Emily looked at Daniel. He was finally choosing the right side of history, even if it meant burying his own mother’s legacy.
“Good,” Emily said. “Arthur, take Daniel’s statement. Add it to the pile.”
Evelyn walked over to the window, looking out over the sprawling, perfectly manicured lawns of the estate. For the first time in twenty years, she wasn't looking at the world through barred glass.
“We won, Emily,” Evelyn said softly, tears of profound relief sliding down her cheeks.

Emily walked over and wrapped her arm around her mother’s shoulders.
“Not yet,” Emily replied, looking out at the horizon. “Winning means making sure they can never, ever do this to anyone else again.”
