Chapter 20

The return to the mansion felt entirely different this time. The oppressive, heavy atmosphere of Margaret’s reign had evaporated, leaving behind a sprawling, silent architecture waiting for new direction.

Emily, Evelyn, and Daniel walked through the grand foyer. The staff, having received the official legal updates from Arthur, had lined up near the staircase. They looked nervous, unsure of how to treat the woman who had been dragged out as a thief just days prior.

Vance, the head of security, stepped forward.

“Ms. Emily. The house is secure. Margaret’s personal suites have been locked, pending your instructions.”

“Thank you, Vance,” Emily said, her tone authoritative but kind. She looked at the line of maids, cooks, and groundskeepers. “No one is losing their jobs today. The foundation will continue to pay your salaries. However, the culture of this house changes immediately. Fear is no longer a requirement of your employment.”

A collective, silent breath of relief rippled through the staff.

Emily turned to Evelyn. “Where do you want to start?”

Evelyn looked up at the grand staircase.

“The master suite. Margaret took Eleanor’s bedroom after she died. I want it cleared out.”

Emily nodded. She handed the brass key ring to Daniel.

“You know her private spaces better than anyone. Lead the way.”

Daniel took the keys, his hand shaking slightly, and walked up the stairs. Emily and Evelyn followed closely behind.

Margaret’s suite was a monument to excess. Silk curtains, antique French furniture, and massive walk-in closets overflowing with haute couture. It was a room financed entirely by blood and stolen charity.

“Pack it all,” Emily ordered, looking around in disgust. “Every dress, every piece of jewelry, every painting she bought with foundation money. Arthur will auction it off and return the capital to the charitable trust.”

Daniel opened a large mahogany armoire and pulled out a stack of velvet jewelry boxes.

“She kept the most expensive pieces hidden,” Daniel said, his voice hollow as he handed the boxes to Emily. “She always said you needed liquid assets in case the market crashed.”

Emily opened the top box. Inside rested a massive, flawless diamond necklace. Not the cheap replica Vanessa had used to frame her, but the real, multi-million-dollar heirloom.

Evelyn gasped, stepping back.

“That’s Eleanor’s coronation piece,” Evelyn whispered. “Margaret claimed it was lost in a bank transfer a decade ago.”

“She didn't lose it,” Emily said, snapping the velvet box shut. “She hoarded it.”

Emily handed the box back to Vance, who had followed them upstairs with a team of security guards carrying heavy cardboard moving boxes.

“Log everything. I want a complete inventory by midnight,” Emily commanded.

As the guards began systematically dismantling Margaret’s opulent life, Emily noticed a small, locked wooden box sitting on the bedside table.

“Daniel,” Emily pointed. “Open that.”

Daniel retrieved a small key from his mother’s hidden vanity drawer and unlocked the wooden box.

Inside was a single, heavily redacted file. The cover read: Brightwood Psychiatric - Patient Transfer Protocols.

Evelyn’s breath hitched.

Emily reached into the box and pulled out the file. It wasn't just a medical record. It was the blueprint of how to make a human being disappear.
