Chapter 39 - The Glass LedgerAlexander tapped the microphone. The sharp screech of feedback echoed through the silent ballroom.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” Alexander began, his voice resonating with commanding clarity. “Thank you for attending the Blackwood Autumn Gala. As many of you know, I am soon to be married to Emily Carter, the head of the Eleanor Foundation.”
A polite ripple of applause swept through the crowd. Josephine stood near the back, her face entirely devoid of color, desperately trying to signal her security team to cut the microphone.
“Today, the press questioned Emily’s financial competency,” Alexander continued, looking directly at his mother. “It was suggested that the foundation requires the guidance of old, established wealth to ensure its survival.”
Emily walked up the steps and joined Alexander on the stage. She looked out at the sea of billionaires and socialites.
“But true transparency shouldn't hide in the shadows,” Emily took the microphone, her voice absolute steel. “That is why the Eleanor Foundation is officially launching the 'Glass Ledger' initiative. Effective immediately, we are instituting mandatory, deep-dive forensic audits for any family, corporation, or trust that seeks to partner with our charity.”
The crowd murmured, sensing a drastic shift in the atmosphere.
“We must ensure that our partners are financially solvent,” Emily continued, her eyes locking onto Josephine. “We cannot allow predatory entities, drowning in massive offshore debt, to use philanthropic mergers as a smokescreen to pay off their creditors.”
Gasps echoed through the ballroom. The socialites weren't stupid; they understood exactly what Emily was implying.
Josephine took a step forward, completely abandoning her aristocratic poise.
“Cut the microphone!” Josephine shrieked at the sound engineer. “Cut it now!”
But Arthur had already anticipated her move. He stood beside the soundboard, his arms crossed, blocking the security guards with the help of two off-duty police officers he had hired for the evening.
“For example,” Alexander took the microphone back, his voice dropping the final, devastating bomb. “The Blackwood Estate. We have officially declined to merge our assets, as our independent auditors have discovered a sixty-million-dollar deficit hidden in offshore shell companies.”
