Chapter 35 - The Mirage of WealthThree days later, Arthur practically sprinted into Eleanor’s office, his face pale and slick with sweat. He slammed a thick, red file onto Emily’s desk.

“You were right,” Arthur gasped, catching his breath. “The mother-in-law isn't just greedy. She’s completely desperate.”
Emily opened the file. Her eyes scanned the complex financial spreadsheets, bank routing numbers, and deeply buried shell company records.
“Explain it to me,” Emily said.
“The Blackwood fortune is a mirage,” Arthur explained, pacing the room. “Josephine’s late husband made a series of catastrophic investments in international real estate a decade ago. They’ve been heavily leveraging their legacy assets just to keep up appearances. The private jets, the estates, the political donations... it’s all financed by high-interest offshore debt.”
Emily flipped to the final page of the audit. The final number was circled in red ink.
“They are sixty million dollars in the hole,” Emily breathed, looking up in shock.
“Worse,” Arthur corrected. “The offshore creditors are calling in the markers. Josephine has exactly six months to liquidate assets she doesn't actually own, or her entire estate goes into foreclosure. She will be publicly bankrupted. The Blackwood name will be completely ruined.”
Emily leaned back in the heavy leather chair. The puzzle pieces violently snapped into place.
“She doesn't want to protect the foundation from me,” Emily realized, a cold fury settling in her chest. “She wants to merge the foundation into a joint trust so she can use Eleanor’s eighty million dollars to quietly pay off her personal debts.”
“She’s trying to use your charity as a bailout fund,” Arthur confirmed. “And she’s using her son’s marriage as the Trojan horse to get inside.”
“Does Alexander know?”
“No,” Arthur shook his head firmly. “Alexander’s trust fund was isolated by his grandfather. He has his own money from his law practice. Josephine kept him completely in the dark to maintain her matriarchal control. If he knew she was bankrupt, he would intervene legally.”

Emily closed the red folder, her expression hardening into absolute steel.
“Josephine is about to learn a very painful lesson,” Emily whispered. “You do not steal from victims to pay for your pride.”
