Chapter 27

The afternoon after the sentencing, the mansion was filled with warm, golden light. The heavy velvet drapes in Eleanor’s old office had been permanently removed, allowing the sun to finally sanitize the corners of the room.

Emily sat at the massive oak desk, reviewing a stack of approved legal grants for the foundation’s new advocacy program. The work was exhausting, but it was incredibly fulfilling. She was actively changing lives every single day.

There was a soft knock on the door. Daniel stepped into the office, carrying a small travel duffel bag over his shoulder.

Emily put down her pen and looked up, slightly surprised.

“Are you going somewhere?” she asked.

Daniel offered a gentle, somewhat melancholic smile.

“I’m leaving, Emily. I booked a flight to London this evening.”

Emily stood up, walking around the desk.

“You don't have to leave, Daniel. The foundation can use you. You’ve been invaluable during the transition.”

“I know,” Daniel said, looking around the bright, clean office. “But I can't stay here. This house... this city... it’s entirely defined by what my mother did. I need to go somewhere where my last name doesn't carry a body count. I need to figure out who I am when I’m not being manipulated.”

Emily understood perfectly. He needed to build his own identity, away from the toxic gravity of his family’s wealth.

“What will you do?” she asked.

“I’m going to study architecture,” Daniel smiled, a genuine spark of excitement in his eyes. “I spent my whole life living in a house built on lies. I want to learn how to build something real. Something strong.”

Emily reached out and hugged him. It was a brief, fierce embrace between two people who had survived a war they never asked to fight.

“You’re a good man, Daniel,” Emily said, stepping back. “Eleanor would have been proud of you.”

Tears welled in Daniel’s eyes, but he quickly wiped them away.

“Take care of the foundation, Emily. It’s exactly where it belongs now.”

“I will,” she promised.

Daniel turned and walked out the door, his footsteps echoing softly down the hallway, leaving the ghosts behind for good.
