Chapter 31 - The Unwelcome GuestThree years had passed since the heavy steel doors of the federal penitentiary closed on Margaret.

The Eleanor Foundation had evolved from a quiet charitable trust into a global powerhouse for victims' rights. Emily Carter was no longer the frightened daughter of a dismissed maid; she was the untouchable architect of a new philanthropic empire.
But power always attracted those who wished to steal it.
Emily stood in the grand foyer of the mansion, adjusting the collar of her white silk blouse. Tonight was an important night. She was hosting a private dinner for her fiancé, Alexander Blackwood, a brilliant human rights attorney who had been instrumental in expanding the foundation’s legal advocacy programs into Europe.
Alexander was kind, fiercely intelligent, and deeply in love with Emily.
His mother, however, was a different story entirely.
Josephine Blackwood, Emily’s future mother-in-law, was the matriarch of a crumbling, old-money dynasty. She was a woman who hid behind perfectly tailored Chanel suits, a razor-sharp smile, and a suffocating aura of aristocratic superiority.
The heavy front doors opened, and Alexander walked in, looking handsome in a tailored suit. Beside him stood Josephine.
Her cold, calculating eyes immediately swept over the marble floor, the grand staircase, and finally rested on Emily.
“Emily, darling,” Josephine said, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness. “The estate looks... acceptable. Though I must admit, it still feels strange to see you playing the lady of the house.”
Emily did not flinch. She had survived Margaret; she would not be intimidated by Josephine.
“Welcome to our home, Josephine,” Emily replied, her voice smooth and entirely composed.
Evelyn stepped out from the drawing room, wearing a simple but elegant dress.
Josephine’s smile tightened into a thin, white line.
“Ah, Evelyn,” the mother-in-law murmured, a condescending edge slipping into her tone. “Still keeping the place so wonderfully clean, I see.”
Alexander stiffened, shooting his mother a warning look.
“Mother. Stop.”
Emily simply smiled, linking her arm through her mother’s.

“Evelyn doesn't clean the house, Josephine. She owns it. Shall we go into the dining room?”
The battle lines were drawn before the first course was even served.
