Chapter 12

The police observer, Detective Vance, cleared his throat. It was a small sound, but it carried the weight of the law.
“Given the contents of this safe deposit box, and the active fraud investigation regarding the foundation, no one is leaving this building just yet,” Vance stated flatly.
Margaret’s spine stiffened.
“Am I under arrest, Detective?”
“Not at this exact moment,” Vance replied, pulling a notebook from his breast pocket. “But this photograph places you, Richard, and Daniel at the scene of a suspected will tampering. And Mrs. Evelyn’s medical records indicate severe, systemic abuse under a false identity. I have enough probable cause to detain you for questioning.”
Vanessa, who had been standing silently in the corner, let out a choked sob.
“I didn't know about the hospital,” Vanessa pleaded, looking at the detective. “I swear, I only knew about the necklace. I just did what Margaret told me to do.”
Margaret shot Vanessa a look of absolute disgust.
“Be quiet, Vanessa. Don't humiliate yourself further.”
Emily watched the exchange with cold detachment. She remembered the sting of Vanessa’s hand on her cheek. She remembered the sneer on her face when she called Emily a thief.
“You aren't a victim, Vanessa,” Emily said, her voice entirely devoid of sympathy. “You chose your side because it was comfortable. The discomfort you feel now is just the price of admission.”
Vanessa crumbled, burying her face in her hands.
Arthur turned to Emily, holding the heavy stack of original foundation documents.
“Emily, as the designated protector named in Eleanor’s verified final will, you now have immediate, emergency fiduciary control over the eighty million dollars in charitable assets. Furthermore, you have the authority to suspend all current board members pending an investigation.”
Emily looked at the documents. Eighty million dollars. A fortune built to help people, twisted by Margaret into a weapon of control.
“Draft the suspension notices, Arthur,” Emily commanded.
“Right now?” Arthur asked.
“Right now. Effective immediately. I want Margaret’s access to the foundation’s accounts frozen before we even walk out of this bank.”
Margaret’s eyes widened. For the first time, the reality of her total defeat registered in her expression. The money was gone. The power was gone.

Emily picked up the brown handbag, holding it carefully.
“You took my mother’s name,” Emily said to Margaret. “So I am taking your empire.”
