Chapter 40 - The Fall of the EmpireThe fallout was instantaneous and utterly catastrophic for the mother-in-law.

Before the gala had even concluded, the rumor mill had mutated into a frenzy of panicked phone calls. Politicians who had long relied on Blackwood campaign donations scrambled to distance themselves. Wealth managers frantically checked their exposure to Josephine’s toxic assets.

Josephine fled the ballroom, locking herself in the estate’s massive library.

Emily and Alexander did not stay for the aftermath. They walked out through the grand front doors, hand in hand, leaving the burning wreckage of the Blackwood social dynasty behind them.

The next morning, the mansion was peaceful. Evelyn was in the kitchen, humming softly as she prepared breakfast.

Emily sat at the island, drinking coffee, watching the morning news. The headlines had violently shifted.

Alexander walked into the kitchen, looking exhausted but deeply relieved. He had spent the entire night on the phone with his law firm, legally separating his personal assets from his mother’s collapsing estate.

“It’s over,” Alexander said, sitting next to Emily. “Her creditors saw the news. They’ve formally initiated foreclosure proceedings on the estate. The offshore syndicates have frozen all of her remaining liquid accounts.”

“Are you okay?” Emily asked gently, touching his hand. It was his family, after all.

“I’m fine,” Alexander promised, offering a genuine smile. “I lost a toxic legacy, but I kept the woman I love. I’d say I won the exchange.”

Suddenly, the heavy front doors of the mansion banged open.

Vance, the head of security, rushed into the foyer.

“Ms. Emily!” Vance shouted, his usual calm demeanor entirely fractured. “You have a breach at the front gate!”

Emily stood up instantly. “Who is it?”

Before Vance could answer, Josephine Blackwood burst into the kitchen, closely followed by two massive security guards who had clearly been struggling to hold her back without resorting to violence.

The impeccably dressed matriarch was completely unhinged. Her hair was disheveled, her makeup smeared, and her eyes were wide with absolute, manic desperation.

“You destroyed me!” Josephine screamed, pointing a trembling, manicured finger at Emily.
