Chapter 34 - The Circle Closes

The years passed.
The foundation continued to thrive under Emma’s leadership.
She was a brilliant CEO.
She expanded our reach, tackling new issues, fighting new battles.
Alessandro and I stepped back.
We became advisors.
We traveled.
We enjoyed the quiet moments.
One evening, we were sitting on the terrace, watching the sun set over the city.
The same city he used to rule with an iron fist.
The city we had helped to heal.
"Do you ever miss it?" I asked him.
"The old days? The power?"
He thought for a moment.
"Sometimes," he admitted. "It was simpler when the only goal was winning."
He turned to look at me.
"But then I remember what I had to sacrifice to win."
He reached out and took my hand.
"I have everything I need right here."
A little girl ran out onto the terrace.
Emma’s daughter.
She had dark curls and bright, curious eyes.
"Nonno!" she cried, running to Alessandro.
He scooped her up in his arms, his face lighting up.
"Hello, my little bird."
She pointed to the sky.
"Look! The stars are waking up."
I watched them together.

The old man and the little girl.
The circle was complete.
