Chapter 21 - A New Threat
Peace is a fragile thing.
It requires constant vigilance.
The threat this time didn't come from a boardroom.
It came from the streets.
A new syndicate was trying to move into the city.
They were aggressive.
They were ruthless.
And they saw the new, "softer" Moretti empire as a target.
They started small.
Intimidating local businesses that the foundation supported.
Vandalizing construction sites.
Sending anonymous threats.
Marco doubled the security around the mansion.
He insisted on a bodyguard for Emma.
Emma was not pleased.
"I don't need a shadow," she complained, crossing her arms.
"It's just for a little while, piccolina," Alessandro promised. "Until we sort this out."
He was stressed.
I could see the tension in his shoulders.
The old instincts were fighting with the new rules he had set for himself.
He wanted to strike back.
To crush them.
But he knew that would only lead back to the darkness.
"We have to do this right," he told Marco late one night. "We find the evidence. We take it to the authorities. We don't become the monsters we defeated."
