Chapter 24 - The Letter from Prison

A letter arrived.
It was addressed to Alessandro.
The return address was a maximum-security prison.
It was from Adrian Bellini.
Alessandro stared at the envelope for a long time before opening it.
I waited, giving him space.
When he finally read it, his expression was unreadable.
He handed the letter to me.
It was short.
Moretti,
I have had a lot of time to think.
You were right. The truth doesn't fix everything. But it is a start.
I am not writing to ask for forgiveness. I don't deserve it.
I am writing to say that the cycle ends here.
My family's war is over.
Protect yours.
Bellini.
I looked up at Alessandro.
"What does this mean?"
"It means he has finally let go," Alessandro said quietly.
"The ghost of the past is finally resting."
It was a strange kind of closure.
Not a neat, happy ending.
But a definitive end to a decades-long feud.

The slate was finally clean.
We were truly free to write our own future.
