Chapter 17 - The First Day of School
Emma was growing up.
Quickly.
Too quickly, sometimes.
The day she started her new school, the mansion was in chaos.
Backpacks were lost.
Shoes were misplaced.
Button was temporarily missing in action.
"I can't go!" Emma wailed from the top of the stairs.
Alessandro emerged from his office, already dressed in a suit.
He looked at the scene.
"What is the emergency?"
"Button is hiding," Emma said, tears threatening to spill. "He knows I'm leaving."
Alessandro walked up the stairs.
He knelt beside her.
"Emma, Button is a very smart bear. He knows you have to go to school to learn how to read all the books in the library."
"But what if he gets lonely?"
"I will personally ensure he is entertained," Alessandro promised seriously. "I will read him the financial reports."
Emma giggled, the tears vanishing.
"He will fall asleep."
"Probably," Alessandro agreed. "Now, let's find him."
They found Button under the sofa in the drawing-room.
With the bear secured, Emma finally put on her backpack.
We walked her to the car.
As she climbed in, she turned back.
"Will you be here when I get back?"
Alessandro smiled.
"Always."
