Chapter 30 - The Graduation

Emma’s high school graduation was a milestone we had all been waiting for.

She was valedictorian.

Of course she was.

She was brilliant, driven, and passionate.

As she stood on the stage, delivering her speech, I looked at the young woman she had become.

She didn't talk about her grades.

She talked about her family.

"I learned early on that life is unpredictable," she told her classmates.

"I learned that you can lose everything in a moment."

She looked out at the audience, finding our faces in the crowd.

"But I also learned that family is not just about who you are born to. It is about who stands by you when the world falls apart."

She smiled, a bright, confident smile.

"I am standing here today because two people chose to love me. Chose to protect me. Chose to be my family."

I held Alessandro’s hand tightly.

He was trying very hard not to cry.

And failing.

As she finished her speech, the crowd erupted in applause.

She walked off the stage, diploma in hand, and ran straight into our arms.

"We are so proud of you," Alessandro whispered, holding her tight.

"I love you guys," she said.

It was everything.
