Chapter 18 - The Ghost in the Machine


The past, we learned, doesn't disappear just because you want it to.
It waits.
It hides in the shadows.
And sometimes, it rears its head when you least expect it.
It started with small things.
Discrepancies in the foundation's accounts.
Files that went missing and reappeared days later.
Whispers in the boardroom.
At first, Alessandro thought it was a glitch.
An accounting error.
But Marco, the head of security, knew better.
"Someone is testing the fences," Marco said one evening, looking over a stack of printouts.
Alessandro frowned. "Who?"
"I don't know yet. But the digital footprint is sophisticated. They are trying to find a weakness in the new structure."
I felt a chill.
We had worked so hard to build a transparent, ethical company.
But there were still people who preferred the old ways.
People who thrived in the dark.
"Find them," Alessandro said, his voice hardening. "Before they can do any real damage."
The old Alessandro would have reacted with immediate, aggressive force.
The new Alessandro was patient.
