Chapter 19 - The Boardroom Battle

The enemy wasn't outside the walls.

They were inside.

It was a faction of the old board members.

Men who had thrived under his uncle's corrupt rule.

Men who hated the new direction of the Moretti empire.

They didn't like the foundation.

They didn't like the transparency.

They especially didn't like me.

They saw me as a weakness.

A distraction.

They called an emergency board meeting.

Their goal was clear: a vote of no confidence.

They wanted to remove Alessandro.

I waited in his office while the meeting took place.

The hours dragged on.

I paced.

I worried.

What if they succeeded?

What if all the good we had done was erased?

Finally, the door opened.

Alessandro walked in.

He looked tired.

But his eyes were bright.

"Well?" I asked, my heart pounding.

He walked over to his desk and poured a glass of water.

"They tried," he said simply.

"And?"

He turned to face me.

"And they failed. I had Marco tracking their communications for weeks. I presented their plan to sell off the foundation's assets to the rest of the board before they even had a chance to speak."

I breathed a sigh of relief.

"What happens now?"

"They are gone," Alessandro said, his voice cold. "I bought out their shares. The company is finally, truly ours."

He walked over and pulled me into his arms.

"We are safe."
