Emma chose to study law.
"I want to understand the rules," she explained, "so I can change them."
She went to a top university.
She thrived.
She came home on holidays, filling the mansion with energy and stories.
She brought friends home.
Young people who were passionate about changing the world.
Alessandro loved debating with them.
He challenged their idealism.
They challenged his pragmatism.
It was exactly what the house needed.
A constant flow of new ideas.
New perspectives.
During one of her summer breaks, Emma interned at the foundation.
She didn't want special treatment.
She worked in the legal clinic, helping the lawyers with research.
I watched her one afternoon, sitting across from a terrified client.
She was patient.
She was empathetic.

"She is going to be a force of nature," Alessandro said, standing beside me.
"She already is," I replied.
