Chapter 55

|

Two months later, the suffocating heat of the summer gave way to the crisp, clear air of early autumn. The bar exam was behind her, a grueling marathon of legal endurance that she had passed with flying colors.

Lily stood on the sidewalk of a quiet, tree-lined street in a working-class neighborhood of the city. She was holding a set of shiny new keys. She looked up at the small, brick storefront. It wasn't a towering glass high-rise, and it didn't have mahogany conference tables. It had large, clean windows, a welcoming front door, and a profound sense of safety.

She walked up to the door and unlocked it. The space inside was bright, airy, and completely empty, waiting to be filled with the stories of survival.

Lily walked over to the front desk, carefully placing the heavy brass nameplate Grant had given her perfectly in the center. She walked into her small private office and placed her briefcase on the desk. Finally, she took the elegant silver picture frame out of her bag—the frame Emma had given her on her first day of law school—and placed it on the windowsill, where it immediately caught the morning sunlight.

You were always full of fire. Go light up the world.

She stood in the center of her new office, looking out at the city streets. The ghosts of her past, the men who had tried to silence her, and the systemic monsters she had fought were all gone, banished entirely to the shadows by the blinding light of the truth.

She had once been a girl taught that her voice was a weapon that would destroy her family. Now, she was a woman who knew her voice was an impenetrable shield that would protect the vulnerable.

The phone on her desk rang for the very first time.

Lily smiled, a fierce, beautiful expression of absolute freedom. She walked over, picked up the receiver, and answered.

"Law Office of Lily Vance," she said, her voice clear, strong, and ready for the fight. "How can I help you?"
