Chapter 34

The night before Lily moved to a new city for law school, the house was quiet. Her bags were packed, stacked neatly by the front door just as they had been four years earlier. She stood in the master bathroom, looking at herself in the mirror. The scar above her ear was barely noticeable now, completely healed over, a permanent part of her architecture.
Emma appeared in the doorway, holding two mugs of hot tea.
"Ready to leave?" Emma asked, offering a gentle smile.
Lily took a mug, letting the warmth seep into her hands. She looked at her reflection one last time.
"Yes," Lily said.
They walked down the grand staircase together, moving toward the kitchen. Grant was sitting at the table, reviewing a final legal document for Lily’s trust. Upon turning twenty-two, she officially took absolute control of her inheritance.
"The lawyers finalized the restructuring," Grant said, sliding the heavy folder toward her. "The trust is completely insulated. No board member, no spouse, and no external entity can ever leverage these funds without your direct, uncoerced signature."
Lily signed the final page with a steady hand. "Thank you for setting the perimeter, Dad."
"You won't need it," Grant said softly. "But it is there."
Lily closed the folder. She looked at the two people sitting with her. Grant, the titan who had learned how to yield. Emma, the protector who had taught them all how to listen. They were a broken family that had forged themselves into something unbreakable.
"Ten years," Lily whispered, looking at Emma. "Ten years since the smoke."

"It feels like a lifetime ago," Emma said, sipping her tea.
"It was a different lifetime," Lily agreed. "I am glad we survived it."
